Halloween meeting: On Death

It will be on Tuesday, October 29th, in Robert Room 412 at 1:40 P.M. We will be discussing individual attitudes towards death. the question we want to use to open the meeting is - If you were given the opportunity to be immortal would you take it? Would you ever want immortality? Do you have specific conditions you would apply to your immortality? What if everyone had this kind of immortality? Does immortality give life more meaning or less? Be prepared to talk about sensitive topics such as: The possible fatality of life The possible meaninglessness of life Suicide The death of loved ones Suggested readings that some members will be talking about are, Camera Lucida by Roland Barthes chapters 25-31 The Denial of Death by Ernest Becker  Forward and Preface At A Graveside by Søren Kierkegaard Is Life Worth Living 

Our First Meeting Discussion: Don’t Hate the Player, Hate the Game

Our meeting will be on Tuesday, October 15th, in Robert Room 412 at 1:30 P.M. Overall we want to consider the push and pull of individual morality and systems of power. Some of the questions we will be using to guide our discussion will be: Who are the players and what is the game E.G. citizens v. government bodies, consumers v. corporations, Why are we so inclined to hate the player in the first place? E.G. Individualist values intertwined in the system, False senses of equality and freedom What is the system(s) we live in? E.G. Capitalism, post-industrialization, post-truth, post-modern, hyper-consumerism, etc. What are some consequences of these systems? E.G. Oppression, ecological destruction, epistemic uncertainty, alienation, individualism, mass entertainment/distraction What can we do to change the game? E.G.
